SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse junior goalie John Galloway was named to the ESPN The Magazine Men's Academic All-District I At-Large First Team on Thursday, May 20. It marks the second time in three seasons the Orange has had a player earn academic all-district first-team honors (Mike Leveille, 2008).
By virtue of his placement on the district's first team, Galloway's name will be forwarded to the national Academic All-America ballot to be voted upon by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Galloway turned in a stellar 2010 campaign. He was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year after leading the nation and setting an Orange season record with a 7.16 goals-against average. Galloway also ranked second nationally in save percentage (.595).
He started all 15 games for Syracuse this season and posted a 13-2 record while making 144 saves.
For his career, Galloway has 454 saves, which ranks 10th on the school's all-time list. He owns an overall record of 44-6 and holds an 8-1 record in NCAA playoff games. Galloway's 44 career victories are tied with UMBC's Jeremy Blevins for the fifth-most by a Division I netminder.
Off the field, Galloway is a public relations major with a 3.4 cumulative grade-point average in Syracuse's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. He has been named to the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll (min. 3.0 GPA) four times.
To be eligible for the Academic All-America program, student-athletes must achieve sophomore standing at their current school and possess a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3. Participants in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling are eligible for the men's at-large program.
