NORFOLK, Va. – Syracuse outshot Old Dominion, 15-7, but couldn't find the back of the net as the teams played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Sunday, Aug. 22 in Norfolk, Va. The Orange goes to 0-1-1 on the season. The game was the Monarch's season opener.
In her collegiate debut, Syracuse freshman goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made three saves and recorded her first career shutout. Two of her saves came in the first half when she stopped both of Old Dominion's shots.
The first half was evenly played as Syracuse held a slight advantage in shots, 3-2, and earned three corner kicks. The Orange continued to pressure Old Dominion in the second half, recording 11 shots to three for the Monarchs. Junior Taylor Chamberlain had a scoring opportunity in the 51st minute, but her shot hit the cross bar. In the 71st minute, sophomore Tina Romagnuolo hit the post with her shot as the game remained scoreless.
“I couldn't be more proud of our effort,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “The difference between Friday (vs. William & Mary) and today was amazing. The focus and intensity shown collectively by the team was fantastic. We challenged the players to take the game to Old Dominion. They are a big, strong team that plays direct. Our players stuck together as a unit and didn't get rattled. We matched Old Dominion in every aspect of the game.”
For the second consecutive game, Wheddon substituted frequently, using six players off the bench.
“A number of people stepped up today and played well,” Wheddon said. “It's such a luxury to have such a great group of players who can contribute. In our training session yesterday we asked the players to apply everything we were doing into the game today. The players did everything today we asked them to do.”
After opening the season with two consecutive road games, the Orange hosts Lehigh in its home opener on Friday at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
"It's been wonderful to see so many parents at the games," Wheddon said. "The support we'ave seen at the first two games has been tremendous. We look forward to seeing everyone at the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday."
