SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Rosina Callisto scored her first career goal and freshman Brittany Anghel recorded a career high in saves to lead Syracuse to a 1-0 victory against St. John's on Friday, Sept. 17 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The win extends the Orange's winning streak to three and improves its record to 4-3-2, 1-0 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm goes to 3-3-1 overall, 0-1 in conference action.
Syracuse opens BIG EAST play with a victory for the first time since the 2005 season when it also defeated St. John's, 2-0, in Jamaica, N.Y. In 2008, the Orange and Red Storm played to a 0-0 tie at the SU Soccer Stadium.
“We want to be in the top five in the BIG EAST, that's been our motto all season,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “This puts us one step closer to being in the top five. St. John's is very well-organized team. For us, this was a tremendous victory. It sets us on the right path.”
Callisto recorded the game's only goal in the 16th minute. St. John's goalkeeper Kristin Russell tried to clear the ball out of the defensive end, but Callisto intercepted the pass 10 yards outside the box. She made a move around a St. John's defender and put her shot in the back of the net for her first career goal. The Red Storm had its best scoring chance of the night less than a minute later, but Syracuse junior Casey Ramirez stopped Raelynne Lee's shot to preserve the lead. Anghel recorded seven saves in the first half as the Orange led at halftime for the first time this season.
St. John's turned up the pressure in the second half, but the Orange was up to the task. Syracuse successfully defended against two corner kicks and Anghel made three saves, including two in the final 10 minutes of the game, to record the victory.
The Orange finished the game with 12 shots and four corner kicks, while St. John's registered 13 shots and three corner kicks. Anghel recorded a career-high nine saves and posted her second consecutive shutout. She now has three shutouts this season, which tie her for 10th on SU's single-season record list. Russell made four saves for St. John's.
“Our game plan was to be disciplined and to stay organized, collectively, for 90 minutes,” Wheddon said. “We wanted the players to come out strong in the first half. The goal was a piece of individual brilliance by Rosina Callisto. The heart and hustle we showed throughout the game was tremendous.”
Syracuse goes for its fourth consecutive win on Sunday in its final non-conference game of the season at Yale at 1 p.m.
