ITHACA, N.Y. – Syracuse (1-4-1) ended its two-game losing streak on Wednesday, Sept. 22 with a hard-fought, 1-1 double-overtime draw against Cornell (3-2-2) at Berman Field. The Orange overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit in the match and tied the game on a goal by junior Nick Roydhouse in the 64th minute.
Roydhouse's goal was his team-leading third of the season. He has a tally in three of SU's last four games and leads the Orange with six points.
Wednesday's match was a physical contest. The Big Red played the ball deep on several occasions and relied on its players to win challenges. The strategy worked early on as the Orange started slowly and conceded the first goal when Nico Nissl scored in the 29th minute off passes from Daniel Haber and Jimmy Lannon to give the hosts the lead.
Following Nissl's goal, the Orange re-grouped and began to take control of the game resulting in two good chances to tie the match before intermission. Junior Federico Agreda just missed wide with a shot from the top of the box with 10 minutes left in the stanza, and Roydhouse hit the outside of the net with 1:09 to play before halftime.
Syracuse carried the intensity into the second half and Roydhouse eventually equalized the match with 26:33 left in regulation. Junior Chris Saul started the play with a long pass in behind the Cornell backline. Classmate Fredrik Forsman ran to the ball and played it to Roydhouse deep in the box and he beat Cornell keeper Rick Pflasterer with a shot off the inside of the goalpost to knot the game, 1-1.
Capitalizing on the momentum gained from Roydhouse's strike, the Orange kept the pressure on and almost took the lead several times late in regulation. Roydhouse was again the catalyst. He forced Pflasterer to a make diving save on a free kick with 20 minutes to go. He had another offensive chance five minutes later and Pflasterer made another sprawling save to help force overtime.
In the extra sessions, the Big Red attempted nine shots. But the defense rose to the challenge to help the Orange emerge with a draw.
The two teams combined for 46 shots in the contest with Cornell attempting 26 to 20 for Syracuse.
Orange redshirt senior keeper Jeremy Vuolo made a career-high nine saves in the contest, including six in the second half. Pflasterer finished with five saves for the Big Red.
Wednesday's game concluded a five-match road trip for the Orange. Syracuse returns home on Saturday, Sept. 25 and opens BIG EAST play with a 6 p.m. match against Pittsburgh. It will be a special night at the SU Soccer Stadium as the Orange will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its1985 BIG EAST Championship prior to kickoff.
Match Notes: Saul's assist was the first of his career and Forsman's helper represented his first collegiate point … The Orange is 5-0-1 in the last six meeting with the Big Red … Syracuse's 20 shots was a season high.
