SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse's five-game unbeaten streak came to an end in the Orange's 3-0 setback against Connecticut on Sunday, Sept. 26 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse is now 5-4-3 overall, 2-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Huskies improve to 5-4-2, 1-1-1 in conference action.
Freshman goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made a career-high 10 saves for the Orange. It marks the first time a Syracuse goalkeeper has reached double figures in saves since the 2007 season when Eliza Bennett-Hatten recorded 11 stops against Boston College.
Connecticut started the scoring early. Erin Clark took a pass from Melissa Busque, and got by Anghel, who had come out to defend the play, and put her shot in the open net to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead 1:58 into the game. Connecticut increased its lead in the 39th minute when Angelika Johansson's shot hit off the left post and went into the net. Clark was credited with an assist on the play. The Orange earned four corner kicks in the first half and had four shots, but couldn't find the back net and trailed, 2-0, at halftime.
A second yellow card to Cecilia Borgstrom forced Syracuse to play the final 35 minutes with only 10 players on the field. Johansson registered the game's final goal in the 62nd minute when she scored on a header off a pass from Jessica Shufelt for the 3-0 final. Despite being down a player, Syracuse did create scoring chances, but couldn't convert its opportunities as it lost for the first time in BIG EAST play this season.
“We moved the ball well at times, but it's not consistent for 90 minutes,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We really need it to be consistent for 90 minutes if we are going to compete with every team in the BIG EAST. At times we moved the ball quickly, were dangerous and created opportunities. At times we allowed the field to get too stretched out. We have to make sure that we can pack the field. I thought in the second half we did a much better job of that, but by that time, we were already two goals down.”
Connecticut outshot Syracuse, 21-9, while the Orange held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Jessica Dulskia and Ally Mancino combined for six saves for the Huskies.
The Orange goes on the road for a pair of league games next weekend at No. 5/9 Notre Dame on Friday and at DePaul on Sunday.
