SEATTLE, Wash. - Syracuse opened play at the Husky/Nike Invitational against the host Washington Huskies on Friday, Sept. 3. The home team converted two penalty kick opportunities on its way to a 4-0 win against Syracuse. The Orange, which entered the contest on a three-game unbeaten streak, goes to 1-2-2 on the season, while Washington, which is receiving votes in the national polls, improves to 3-1.
Kate Deines scored twice in the first half to give Washington a 2-0 halftime lead. Her first goal came in the 18th minute on a penalty kick. She then increased Washington's lead when she scored in the 27th minute off a corner kick.
Syracuse started the second half strong, but gave Washington another penalty kick opportunity in the 48th minute. Deines was again successful on the penalty kick attempt for her third goal of the game. The Huskies recorded their final goal when Annie Sittauer scored off a corner in the 55th minute. The Orange was able to manufacture scoring opportunities, outshooting Washington, 5-4, in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net as the Huskies posted the 4-0 victory.
“When you concede two penalty kicks, it changes the course of the game,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “In the second half, we came out strong in the first few minutes, but we conceded the penalty kick and that put us on our heels. Washington deserved to win. They were consistently the better team, but we did put some good things together. We have to eliminate the defensive mistakes. We have to take care of details. We played hard and we played physical.”
Washington recorded 18 shots and seven corners, while Syracuse finished with seven shots and three corners. Syracuse freshman Brittany Anghel recorded a career-high five saves in the first loss of her career. Huskies' goalkeeper Kari Davidson registered one save.
Syracuse is back in action on Sunday when it faces No. 5 Portland on the final day of the Husky/Nike Invitational.
