SU Unanimous Choice To Win BIG EAST

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second straight year,Syracuse has been unanimously selected as the preseason favorite to win the BIG EAST men's lacrosse league, the conference announced on Friday, Jan. 21. The votes were cast by the conference's seven head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
In addition, Syracuse seniors Joel White and John Galloway were voted BIG EAST co-Preseason Defensive Players of the Year. Galloway and White were also both named to the preseason all-conference team. The Orange led all schools with six preseason All-BIG EAST selections.
Syracuse garnered six first-place votes and totaled 36 points in the preseason coaches' poll. Notre Dame, which received one first-place vote and 31 points, was picked second. The Fighting Irish were followed by Georgetown (25 points), Villanova (22 points), St. John's (14 points), Rutgers (13 points) and Providence (6 points) in the voting.
In addition to Galloway and White, seniors Stephen Keogh, John Lade, Jovan Miller and Jeremy Thompson were named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. All six honorees earned All-America status from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) last season.
White, Galloway and Lade were USILA First Team All-Americans in 2010. They formed the core of a Syracuse defense that led the nation in scoring defense (7.4 goals allowed per game).
White, a long-stick midfielder, became the first defensive specialist to win the Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin Jr. Award as nation's best midfielder last year. He enters his senior season as SU's career leader in points by a defensive player (22) and has 204 career ground balls.
Galloway became the first Orange goalie to win the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award as the country's top goalkeeper, and was the first SU netminder to earn first-team All-America honors since 1925. Galloway led the nation with a 7.16 goals-against average a year ago.
Lade ranked second on the team to White last season with 22 caused turnovers. He also collected 32 ground balls on close defense, while usually marking the opposing team's top attackman.
Miller and Thompson make up two-thirds of SU's top midfield line. Miller was a third-team All-American last season. He contributed 21 points, including 15 goals, and was second on the team with 48 ground balls. Thompson received second-team All-America recognition after scoring 15 goals and passing out eight assists. He was also a force at the faceoff X, winning 58.2 percent (78-134) of his draws.
Keogh led Syracuse with 31 goals a season ago on his way to honorable mention All-America accolades. Keogh has 100 career goals and 113 career points. He is the team's active leader in both categories.
Notre Dame had four players named to the preseason all-conference team, including BIG EAST Preseason Attack Player of the Year Zach Brenneman. Villanova and Georgetown each had two players named to the squad.
Syracuse begins the 2011 regular season at home on Sunday, Feb. 20 against Denver. The Orange will open BIG EAST Conference play against Georgetown in the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic on Saturday, March 12 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
