BALTIMORE – Many believe Syracuse and Virginia are the top two college lacrosse teams in America. Those opinions were validated on Monday, Jan. 31 when the two major national preseason polls were released.
The Orange topped the NIKE/Inside Lacrosse preseason media rankings with the Cavaliers a close second. In the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Preseason Coaches Poll, Virginia claimed the top spot followed immediately by the Orange.
Syracuse earned 293 points and 10 of the 15 first-place votes in the media poll. Virginia garnered 283 points and four first-place votes. The last remaining first-place vote went to North Carolina, which checked in at No. 3 with 255 points.
In the USILA rankings, the Cavaliers received eight of the 11 first-place votes and totaled 216 points. The Orange garnered the remaining three first-place nods and accumulated 211 points.
The rest of the top five in both sets of rankings was the same with North Carolina, Maryland and Duke occupying the three through five slots in both polls.
Syracuse begins the 2011 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 5 with its first preseason scrimmage versus Hofstra and Le Moyne. The Orange opens the regular season at home on Feb. 20 against Denver.
