GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Jenna Caira and sisters Lisaira and Shirley Daniels of the Syracuse University softball team will participate in the XVI Pan American Games beginning on Oct. 17.
Caira will pitch for the Canadian senior women's national team, while the Daniels' will represent the Puerto Rican senior women's national team.
“Individually, it's an opportunity for them to play at a different level; to play against the top players in the world,” head softball coach Leigh Ross said. “I always tell the girls to play as much ball as they can, for as long as they can. I think it's good for them to be able to represent their home countries, which they should be proud about.”
For Caira and Lisaira Daniels, international play is a familiar scene, but Shirley Daniels will partake in her first ever international event.
“I think this tournament will especially be good for Shirley,” Ross said. “She needs to gain some confidence in herself, and how can you not feel confident when you are asked to play for your nation. To be amongst the best athletes in your country is pretty cool.”
The 16th annual Pan American Games features the 28 sports that are competed at the Summer Olympic Games, plus additional disciplines that the host country and the International Federations put forward. It is held every four years and includes athletes from the nations of the Americas. This year's games run from Oct. 14-30 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
