PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Syracuse (9-2) extended its program-best start with a 3-2 win against 10/11 Hawaii (12-3) on Friday night in game two of the Cathedral Classic. Junior pitcher Jenna Caira guided the Orange to the win, matching a career-high with 16 strikeouts while issuing no walks and allowing only one earned run in the complete game showing.
Senior Rachel Helman led the Orange at the plate, going 2-for-4 while junior Lisaira Daniels had a hit and scored a pair of runs.
Hawaii got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, plating a run off two hits and an error to take an early lead, 1-0.
The Orange evened the playing field in the top of the third and L. Daniels led off the inning with a single up the middle and stole second. L. Daniels moved to third on a ground out by Kohl and a deep sacrifice fly to straightaway center allowed L. Daniels the room to tag and score, 1-1.
Syracuse took its first lead of the contest in the top of the seventh as junior Stephanie Watts reached on a fielding error and Helman singled through the left side to put two on. L. Daniels reached on a fielding error, loading the bases. Another fielding error allowed Kohl to reach safely while scoring Watts, 2-1. Senior Hallie Gibbs reached safely on a fielding error that saw Helman out at home, but a throwing error by the catcher on the ensuing play allowed L. Daniels to cross, 3-1.
Hawaii got a run back in the bottom of the seventh off of one hit but the Orange defense closed out the win, 3-2.
