
SU Closes UVA Tournament with 8-1 Win Against Princeton

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 25 Syracuse University softball squad finished its run at the UVA Spring Break Invitational with an 8-1 win against Princeton on Monday, March 14. With the victory, SU closes out the tournament with a 3-2 record.
SU outhit the Tigers 10-8, marking the seventh time this season that the Orange has notched 10 or more hits in a game. Lisaira Daniels, Stephanie Watts, and Jasmine Watson led the Syracuse offensive effort in the win. L. Daniels was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and one RBI. Watts was .500 at the dish with two runs and one RBI of her own. Watson added three RBI and registered her second career homerun in the outing.
The Orange jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Watts earned a leadoff walk and stole second to get in scoring position for L. Daniels, who nailed a triple to left center for the RBI. Lacey Kohl was hit by a pitch and Hallie Gibbs walked, loading the bases. Watson drew a walk from the Princeton pitcher to score L. Daniels. Kealy McMullen slapped one into the short leftfield gap, putting the Orange up, 3-0.
The Orange threatened to extend its lead in the second with back-to-back singles from Watts and L. Daniels, but the Tigers were able to stop SU from rallying.Princeton got on the board in the top of the third to make it a 3-1 game, but SU added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Gibbs singled up the middle and Watson followed with a deep blast over the right field fence to put the Orange up 5-1.
Veronica Grant started things again for SU in the bottom of the fifth with a single. Watts then smashed an RBI triple before scoring on a pass ball. L. Daniels notched a single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild throw by the catcher. Gibbs knocked her in on a groundout to give Syracuse an 8-1 lead that the squad would hold onto for the remainder of the game.
