CLEVELAND, Ohio – In the first meeting between 12/14 Syracuse and rv/- Marquette in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, the Orange (27-8) came up short against the Golden Eagles (22-14), 66-62, in the third round on Sunday at Quicken Loans Arena.
With 1:29 remaining in regulation, the game was tied for the fifth time at 59-59. The Golden Eagles hit a three-pointer to take a 62-59 lead with 27 seconds to play. A pair of three throws increased Marquette's lead to five, but freshman Dion Waiters made it a three-point game, 64-61, with 12 seconds on the clock. Marquette sealed the win with another pair of free throws.
Syracuse started the game 3-of-3 from the floor and the Orange jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Marquette scored the next six points to cut SU's lead to one, 7-6, with 15:51 remaining in the opening period. By the 13:15 mark, Syracuse had regained a 14-6 advantage.
Junior Kris Joseph gave SU its first double-digit lead of the night, 19-9, with 10:33 on the clock.
The Orange had a 21-13 lead with 7:54 on the clock, but Marquette scored seven unanswered points to tie the game at 21 by the 5:17 mark. Sophomore James Southerland scored five of SU's next seven points to make it 29-23 with 3:09 to play.
The last 2:30 of the first half featured three lead changes. A jumper by Marquette's Jimmy Butler gave the Golden Eagles its first lead of the game, 30-29, with 2:19 remaining. Joseph tipped-in a shot to give the lead back to SU, but Marquette scored the last four points of the half to produce a 34-31 lead.
Joseph scored the first four points of the second half to help SU claim a 35-34 lead at the 17:22 mark.
The lead changed hands three times in the next three minutes, but SU scored six consecutive points to make it 46-41 with 12:46 to play. Waiters scored four points during that run and then added four more to help the Orange maintain a 50-49 lead with 9:12 on the clock. A pair of free throws by Marquette's Jae Crowder knotted the game at 53 at the 4:49 mark.
Seven different players contributed to the scoring column for the Orange. Waiters finished with a career high 18 points, while Joseph was SU's other player in double-figures with 12.
Today's contest marked Rick Jackson's 143rd career game played, which tied him for second in program history with Derrick Coleman. He added seven points, four rebounds and three steals.
Syracuse went 26-of-47 (.553) overall from the floor and held Marquette to just 21-of-51 (.412) shooting, but the Golden Eagles went 19-of-23 (.826) from the charity stripe.
Marquette was led by Darius Johnson-Odom's 17 points. The Golden Eagles will advance to play second seed 7/7 North Carolina on Friday, March 25. The Tar Heels defeated Washington 86-83 earlier today.
