SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior Jenna Caira was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced today. This is the first weekly award for the Toronto, Ontario native in 2011 after receiving Second Team All-BIG EAST accolades in 2010.
"Jenna's performance this past weekend was one of the best I have seen," associate head coach Wallace King said. "She dominated opposing lineups by getting ahead in the count, walking few, and scattering hits, while exuding a confidence and mental toughness that was infectous to our entire team."
Caira led the Orange to a 4-1 week, going 2-1 with one save in the circle to improve to 10-3 on the season. She notched a total of 26 strikeouts and held the opposition scoreless through her last 17.0 innings pitched. Caira, who made an appearance in four of SU's five games at the University of Florida Lipton Invitational, gave up just two runs in 23.0 innings of work to record a 0.78 ERA for the weekend.
It is the fifth career weekly award for the Orange ace. Caira and the rest of the SU squad return to the diamond on Saturday, March 12 at 11:30 a.m. when they take on Virginia at the UVA Spring Break Invitational.
