SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior Jenna Caira was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced today. This is the second weekly award for the Toronto, Ontario native in 2011, as she also earned the title for the week of March 7.
"Jenna was able to put together some great outings this week to help us get back on track," associate head coach Wallace King said. "When she is throwing like she did this week, we are a very good squad with the potential to beat anyone. She worked hard over the last week with Coach [Mike] Bosch to correct some minor flaws and it certainly paid off. We have some big games coming up and we will rely on her heavily to help us close out the remainder of the season on a high note before heading into tournament play."
Caira went 5-0 in the circle for the Orange last week, including two shutouts against Villanova. The right-handed hurler struck out 33 opposing batters in 26.0 innings of work. Caira gave up just six runs and allowed 14 hits for a 1.62 ERA in the week's five BIG EAST matchups.
In a 2-0 win over Villanova on April 16, the junior sat down nine batters in a complete-game effort. She allowed just one hit in her second shutout of the week on April 17, a 6-0 decision against the Wildcats, with six strikeouts over five innings of work.
Caira currently leads the league in strikeouts looking with 27 and is second in total strikeouts with 73.
In addition to her domination on the mound, Caira also helped SU at the plate last week, batting .500 for the five-game stretch and registering five hits, one homerun, and two RBI.
This marks the sixth career weekly award for the Orange ace. Caira and the rest of the SU squad return to the diamond on Friday, April 22 at 2 p.m. when they take on UMass Amherst in a non-conference doubleheader.
