Five Orange Honored At BIG EAST Banquet

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Five members of the Syracuse softball team were recognized for their accomplishments at the BIG EAST Conference annual awards banquet on Wednesday, May 11. Junior Jenna Caira was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and an All-BIG EAST First Team selection. Junior second baseman Stephanie Watts and freshman designated player Jasmine Watson received second team honors, while junior Kelly Saco and senior Hallie Gibbs were named to the third team.
This marks Caira's third consecutive All-BIG EAST honor, after being named a second team member last season and rookie of the year and a third team selection during her rookie campaign. It is the first time a Syracuse student-athlete won pitcher of the year. The Toronto, Ontario native has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on four occasions this season. Her 31 wins this season are a program best. She leads the conference in wins (30), ERA (1.47), strikeouts (292) and strikeouts looking (87).
Watts is tied for the lead in the BIG EAST in runs scored during conference games with 23. She leads the Orange with 47 total runs scored and is second in homeruns with 11 and hits with 51. As a second baseman, she has recorded 68 putouts, 80 assists and a fielding percentage of .925.
Watson has tallied 64 putouts and a fielding percentage of .925 as a utility and designated player. She also contributed at the plate, hitting nine homeruns on 31 hits and recorded 26 RBI.
As a first baseman, Saco leads the team and is second in the league in putouts with 354, including a conference-best 17 in one game versus Fresno State. The Miami, Fla. native has tallied nine homeruns, 24 RBI and a slugging percentage of .522. She was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on March 28.
Gibbs ranks eighth in the nation in RBI per game, averaging 1.24. She is tied for first in the conference with a team-best 15 homeruns. The Munster, Ind. native also leads the team and is third in the league in slugging percentage at .778. She has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on three occasions this season.
The Orange kickoffs the 2011 BIG EAST Tournament tomorrow, May 12, at 10 a.m. against Pittsburgh at the University of Louisville's Ulmer Stadium.
