LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The championship game of the BIG EAST Conference Tournament will feature a rematch of the 2010 title matchup between No. 3 Syracuse and No. 5 Louisville on Saturday, May 14, at 5 p.m. Championship action will be aired live on ESPN2.
The two teams met in the finals of the 2010 tournament with the Orange edging the third-seeded Cardinals, 2-1, to claim its first conference title in program history. Fifth-seeded Syracuse became the lowest seed in BIG EAST Championship history to win the crown.
Syracuse is 6-8 all-time in conference tournament action. The Orange defeated No. 4 Villanova, No. 1 DePaul and No. 3 Louisville en route to the 2010 title.
In this year's tournament, the third-seeded Orange (43-11) advanced to the finals after defeating No. 6 Pittsburgh, 2-1, and No. 2 DePaul, 2-0. Louisville (36-17) shutout top-seeded Notre Dame, 6-0, on Friday, May 13, to move into the finals.
The Cardinals lead the all-time series between the two teams 10-6. Syracuse has defeated Louisville on four occasions this season, including a three-game sweep during the final series of the regular-season. The Orange has outscored the Cardinals 20-9 this season.
With Syracuse's win against DePaul, the Orange extended the longest win streak in program history to 13 consecutive games. Junior pitcher Jenna Caira extended her program record season wins mark to 33 games (33-9) against DePaul. She allowed just two hits and fanned seven batters to earn the win and the shutout.
Syracuse was productive early on with consecutive triples in the bottom of the first inning. Junior second basemen Stephanie Watts sent a long ball to right field for a triple. Junior Lisaira Daniels followed with another triple to send Watts home and give the Orange an early 1-0 lead.
Senior third baseman Hallie Gibbs kept the bats going with a single to drive in L. Daniels and SU led 2-0 after the first inning. Syracuse shut down DePaul's offense for seven consecutive innings to secure the shutout.
Louisville senior Chelsea Bemis leads the team with 10 homeruns, including a three-run homer in the semifinals against the Fighting Irish. All-BIG EAST First Team selection, Katie Keller also added a homerun for the Cardinals. Left-handed pitcher Tori Collins recorded the win versus Notre Dame, recording seven strikeouts, to move to 16-9 on the season.
Louisville is 11-4 all-time in championship play. The Cardinals won the BIG EAST crown in 2007 and were runners-up in 2006 and 2010.
