BALTIMORE – The Syracuse men's lacrosse team (13-1, 5-0) reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in both national polls on Monday, May 2. The Orange jumped from No. 4 to the top of the polls following its 11-8 win against previously unbeaten Notre Dame on April 30.
The Orange received 316 points and 13 first-place votes in the NIKE/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll to retake the top spot. In the USILA Coaches Poll, Syracuse earned 213 points and six first-place nods. The Orange had been nation's top-ranked team for the majority of the season before falling to fourth after an April 12 loss to Cornell.
As the only team to defeat Syracuse this season, the Big Red is the consensus No. 2 team in the nation. Notre Dame (No. 3), Johns Hopkins (No. 4) and Denver (No. 5) make up the rest of the top five in the media poll. In the USILA rankings, Johns Hopkins is third followed by Notre Dame (No. 4) and Maryland (No. 5).
Syracuse can win the 2011 BIG EAST title outright with a victory against St. John's on Saturday, May 7 in its regular-season finale. The Orange and Red Storm will faceoff at 1 p.m. inside the Carrier Dome.
