SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior Jenna Caira was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced today. This is the third weekly award for the Toronto, Ontario native in 2011, as she also earned the title for the weeks of March 7 and April 18. Senior Hallie Gibbs also earned recognition from the conference in Week 11, as she was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Caira helped the Orange to a 6-0 week, picking up the decision in all six contests. The right-handed hurler recorded 43 strikeouts through 31.0 innings of work. Caira did not allow opponents to score a single run this week, as all six games were shutout victories. She allowed just nine hits, with opponents batting .093 against her.
The six wins improved Caira's record to 27-9 for the year and extended her lock on SU's single-season win record. With this week's victories, she now leads the Orange with a program career-best 62 wins. This marks the seventh career weekly award for the Syracuse ace.
Gibbs had a strong week at the plate for the Orange, batting .474 with nine hits, including four homeruns, in her six starts. The third baseman tallied six runs, 10 RBI, and a 1.211 slugging percentage for the week.
The SU squad returns to the diamond against Niagara Wednesday, May 4 at 4 p.m.
