SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Kelly Saco (Miami, Fla.) of the Orange softball team and men's lacrosse player, junior Bobby Eilers (Simsbury, Conn.), are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of May 9, 2011.
Saco has recorded 354 putouts and a fielding percentage of .992 as Syracuse's starting first baseman. She is fourth on the team in hits with 38, including nine homeruns this season. In each of the last two seasons, she has been named a BIG EAST All-Academic team honoree.
Saco, a dual major in broadcast journalism and spanish, and the Orange will face Pittsburgh in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday, May 12 at 10 a.m. SU will look to defend its 2010 conference title at the University of Louisville's Ulmer Stadium.
Eilers has scored six goals this season as a member of Syracuse's second midfield. He helped the Orange finish the regular-season 14-1, scoring a goal in last weekend's 20-6 win against St. John's. Against Providence, he recorded his first career hat trick. Following the 2010 season, he was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
Eilers, a communication and rhetorical studies major, and the Orange will take on Siena in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 15. The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start at the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. Tickets are on sale at the Carrier Dome Box Office and online at SUathletics.com. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students (with valid ID) and youth 12 and under.
