Veteran athletics administrator Herman Frazier joins Syracuse University Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross' staff as a deputy athletics director/chief of staff. In his role, Frazier will oversee the daily operation of all facets of Syracuse Athletics.
"During the past years, we have grown the athletics department through defined phases that have led to some of our best success ever. We now plan to improve our success and brand by adding excellent leadership," Gross said. "Phase I was to initiate building of facilities to compete nationally. Phase II involved putting the best head coaching staff in the country together. The next phase includes creating the most dynamic administrative staff in college sports. Recently, we welcomed Floyd Little to the staff as special assistant to the athletics director. I am pleased to announce today the hiring of Herman Frazier, who will be a deputy athletics director and chief of staff.
"Herman's broad experience is unmatched. As a successful two-time athletics director and long-time administrator in college athletics and with the United States Olympic Committee, Herman brings sophistication and proven results to the program. His knowledge, work ethic, and attention to detail will enhance the mission and vision of the department to become, consistently, one of the nation's best programs, while maintaining compliance, graduating student-athletes, and creating new resources to give us the opportunity to be the best. Herman is well-established and highly-respected in NCAA Division 1 college sports and is considered one of the top athletics administrators in the country. I am ecstatic that he is joining our team."
Frazier brings 34 years of experience in athletics administration, including eight years of experience as an athletics director, to Syracuse. Most recently, he has served as the senior associate athletics director for sports administration at Temple University. Prior to joining the Owls' staff, the Philadelphia native served six years as the director of athletics at Hawai'i. Frazier was also the director of athletics at the University Alabama-Birmingham.
"The goal is to help the University and this Athletics program achieve all of its goals within its strategic plan," Frazier said. "The philosophy and leadership of Chancellor Nancy Cantor and Athletics Director Daryl Gross mesh well with my experience in athletics administration. We have talked about many aspects of the program, and I look forward to assisting and working with all of the programs at Syracuse."
At Temple, Frazier supervised the football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and crew programs, and was the administrative liaison for budget, compliance, financial aid, coaching searches, scheduling, academic support, facility issues, event management, media relations, and marketing. He was also responsible for administrative supervision of the equipment operation, facilities, event management, sports medicine, and strength and conditioning. Frazier handled the administrative logistics for the Owls' appearance in the 2009 Eagle Bank Bowl and the 2010 and 2011 men's basketball NCAA Tournament appearances.
Prior to his appointment at Temple, Frazier was the director of athletics at Hawai'i from 2002 through 2008. In his six years at UH, he guided Warrior athletics to unparalleled success with the football team earning a spot in the 2008 Sugar Bowl following an unbeaten regular season. Under Frazier's direction, the football team earned four consecutive bowl bids, and the volleyball program advanced to back-to-back Final Fours. During his tenure, Frazier created premium seat donations, established a five-year financial plan, negotiated head coaching contracts for football and women's basketball, and was instrumental in bringing an Olympic Trials event to Honolulu.
Frazier's first athletics director post was at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 2000. As the second director of athletics in the history of the program, Frazier started a $30 million facility improvement plan and was responsible for instituting new management concepts and master plan for the program.
The 56-year-old Frazier began his athletics administration career immediately upon graduation from Arizona State, joining the Sun Devil staff as a graduate assistant for the track & field program in 1977. In 1979, he was appointed assistant director of events and facilities. During his 23-year tenure at ASU, Frazier moved up the ranks to his final position as senior associate athletics director for business operations. Frazier was the administrator for 10 Olympic sports that won numerous national championships and the football program that earned two Rose Bowl berths and he directed business affairs, operations, and stadium management.
An eight-time All-American track performer at ASU, Frazier was the leadoff runner for the 1976 Olympic Gold Medal-winning 4x400 relay. From 1980 through 2004, Frazier served on various United States Olympic committees, including two stints as the US Olympic Committee Vice President from 1996 through 2004. In 2004, Frazer was chosen Chef De Mission for the entire United States Delegation at the Athens Olympics and presided over the most successful US Olympic team in history with 103 medals.
