Syracuse football starting fullback Adam Harris is being recognized for his off the field work, as well. The SU senior is a nominee for the 2011 Allstate, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. Harris is one of a record 132 nominees for the award, now in its 20th year honoring student-athletes for their commitment to serving others.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team recognizes the selfless contributions to volunteerism and community service made by college football student-athletes across the nation. Widely considered as the sport's pre-eminent community service award, selection to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team has become the standard for off-the-field character and leadership for college football players.
Harris has spent two years as an active volunteer at the Justice Center in Syracuse, which implemented a program that supports teenagers ages 16-18 who have made bad decisions and are attempting to turn their lives around. "Any kind of confidence you can give them, any kind of inspiration is huge, they're learning to find their way out," says Harris.
In addition, the Towanda, Pa. native often returns to his high school to mentor current players. By providing hope for kids to play college football and building their confidence based on his success at the Syracuse program, Harris is a role model and for some an influential male figure in their lives. "Whether it is with lifting or maybe learning how to do some of the right things off the field, I'm just trying to be a mentor," says Harris. Harris also served on the 2010-11 Syracuse Leadership Council for the Football team. The council, selected by Head Coach Doug Marrone, represents the team on important issues and discussions.
After transferring from Cornell for the 2009 season, the former walk-on started in 10 of the 12 games he played in his first season on the field with the Orange in 2010. He finished the year with 21 yards on eight carries and had four receptions for 36 yards, while also playing on special teams. A member of the 2009 Fall, 2010 Spring and 2010 Fall Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Harris is a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree.
Former SU members of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team include Matt Tarullo (2004), Graham Manley (2003) and Kyle Johnson (2000).
A special voting panel of former Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members will select two 11-player Good Works Teams, one comprising student-athletes from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and another featuring players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA. Following the selection in late September, fans will have the opportunity to vote for the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Work Team Captain on the award's customized website.
