FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Brittany Kinmond recorded her first career goal on a penalty kick in the 59th minute to give Syracuse a 1-0 victory against Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, August 21 in the final game of the Embassy Suites Kick Off Classic. The win is the Orange's first of the season, evening its record at 1-1.
“It was a hard-fought game,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “It was hot. Our goal coming down here was to handle the adverse conditions, which we did. We fought hard today and played well. We hope to come back and build on this win.”
The first half was closely contested as Syracuse produced seven shots to six for the Eagles (1-1). SU goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made three saves as did Stephanie Powers for FGCU.
The Orange broke through in the 59th minute. Syracuse won the ball in the midfield. Junior Tina Romagnulo played the ball to Kinmond, who was tackled by a Florida Gulf Coast defender in the box. Kinmond found the back of the net on the penalty kick for the game winner.
“It was a great thru ball by Tina and Brittany made a great run,” Wheddon said. “Even if she hadn't been pulled down, she would have had a one-on-one opportunity against the goalkeeper.”
The Eagles continued to apply offensive pressure, but the Syracuse defense was up to the task. Just minutes after SU took the lead, Anghel stopped a shot by Stacey Payne, and the Orange blocked a shot off the rebound on its way to its first victory in 2011.
Syracuse outshot Florida Gulf Coast, 10-9, while the Eagles earned nine corner kicks. Anghel finished with four saves and posted her seventh career shutout. She is now tied for fifth place on SU's career shutouts leader list with Emily Kowalczyk (2002-05).
The Orange will be back in action on Sunday, August 28 when it takes on Central New York foe Colgate at 1 p.m. in Hamilton, N.Y.
