SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Nick Roydhouse scored three minutes into overtime to lift the Orange men's soccer team (2-2-0) to a 2-1 victory against American (1-4-1) Sunday, Sept. 11 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Roydhouse tallied the game-winner off a free kick to secure Syracuse's second victory of the season.
The overtime strike was Roydhouse's first goal of the year and came on Syracuse's second shot attempt of the overtime period. The goal helped the Orange withstand a late rally by the Eagles, who tied the game in the 84th minute.
In the first half, Syracuse jumped out to an early lead. Junior Louis Clark scored the Orange's first goal in the seventh minute. After collecting a rebound from his own shot, Clark put the ball past American goalkeeper Matt Makowski and into the right side of the net. The goal marked Clark's first tally as a member of the Orange.
The Eagles, despite losing head coach Todd West to a red card for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 35th minute, did not back down. In the 84th minute, senior Jack Scott collected a clear attempt and fired it into the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
In the overtime, senior Dan Summers made a break for the goal and was taken down right outside the box. The Orange was awarded a free kick and Roydhouse converted at the 93:21 mark to clinch the victory.
The Orange controlled the majority of the match Sunday, outshooting the Eagles, 23-8.
Senior goalkeeper Phil Boerger matched his season high with six saves. Makowski, the brother of Syracuse freshman defender Chris Makowski, finished with six saves as well for the Eagles.
SU will play two games next weekend at Akron's First Energy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field as part of the University of Akron Tournament. The Orange will face Cal Poly in the tournament's opening match on Friday, Sept. 16 at 5 p.m. and will square off against New Mexico on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 12 p.m.
