
Orange letterwinner John Lally will received the 2011 Zunic Award on Friday and will be recognized during SU's game against Rutgers on Saturday.

Syracuse football letterwinner John Lally is the 2011 Zunic Award winner, presented by the Syracuse Football Club. Lally will be honored at the when the football Orange host Rutgers on October 1, 2011 (12:00 p.m., BIG EAST Network). An offensive guard for the Orange from 1979-81, Lally will be honored in a halftime ceremony.
A native of Clarence, N.Y., Lally was an All-Western New York selection as a senior at Clarence High School. Lally earned three letters playing for the Orange and graduated in 1982 with a dual degree in marketing and transportation. A was a classmate and close friend of Mike Zunic, Lally was part of the offensive line that blocked for Syracuse's all-time leading rusher Joe Morris.
An active member of his hometown community, Lally is actively involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, including serving as the corporate chairperson for the 2006 Walk for a Cure. Additionally, he has volunteered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNY, American Heart Association, Susan G. Komen Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Hospice, American Diabetes Association and United Way.
The Zunic Award is given annually to anyone who exhibits the courage and spirit of Mike and Judy Zunic. A former SU football standout Mike, and his wife, Judy, died tragically on July 19th, 1989 when a United Airlines flight crashed in Sioux City, Iowa, killing 111 passengers. During the emergency landing, a flight attendant asked for volunteers to help with the exit door, Mike and Judy volunteered. They perished in the crash while the people in the area of the plane where they were originally seated survived.
Zunic was a four-year starter at linebacker for the Orange, Mike Zunic received his bachelor's degree in 1981 and his master's degree in 1982, both in speech communication.
Those eligible for the award include current and former players, current and former coaches, the parents of current and former Orangemen, season ticket holders and anyone associated with SU Football.
Tickets are available for the game online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) and by phone (888-DOMETIX). The Time Warner Triple Play Pack, which includes one ticket to any of three home games of choice, starts at $72, while group sales discounts groups of 20 or more to any home game.
