Senior forward Kris Joseph was named to the John R. Wooded Award Midseason Top 25 list that was announced on January 17 by The Los Angeles Athletic Club. This list consists of 25 student-athletes, who based on performances in November, December and early January, are the frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious individual honor.
Joseph is the leading scorer for the top ranked and 20-0 Orange, averaging 13.7 points and 4.6 rebounds. His teammate, fifth-year guard Scoop Jardine, was named to the Wooden Award preseason top 50 list, but did not make midseason list.
The only returning player from last year's Wooden Award All American team is Ohio State sophomore forward Jared Sullinger. A finalist a year ago, Sullinger is averaging 17.4 points and 9.3 rebounds, and has recorded eight double-doubles at the time of the Midseason Top 25 announcement.
All collegiate basketball players, including transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts are eligible for the midseason list. In March, all players will be considered for the official voting ballot. The National Ballot consists of approximately 20 elite players who are maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA and have proven to their universities that they are making progress toward graduation. The John R. Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament, making it a unique college award because it takes into account postseason performance.
The Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big East conferences boast four selections apiece to the Top 25 list, followed by Big 12 with three. The Missouri Valley Conference, Conference USA, MAAC, Big West, Mountain West and Big Sky each had one player selected. The other players from the Big East include Darius Johnson-Odom of Marquette, Kevin Jones of West Virginia and Jeremy Lamb of Connecticut.
North Carolina (Harrison Barnes, John Henson and Kendall Marshall), Kentucky (Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist), and Ohio State (William Buford and Sullinger) had more than one player selected; all three teams are currently in the Associated Press Top 5. Davis, Kidd-Gilchrist and Cody Zeller of Indiana were the only freshmen on the midseason list.
The 36th annual Wooden Award ceremony, which will take place on Friday, April 6, 2012, the weekend of the NCAA Final Four in New Orleans, Louisiana, will honor winners, All- Americans and the Legends of Coaching winner Geno Auriemma of Connecticut.
