PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Six Syracuse players scored in double-figures leading No. 1 Syracuse (16-0, 3-0) past Providence (11-5, 0-3) 87-73 on Wednesday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Junior guard Brandon Triche scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the second half, and hit 4-of-5 from downtown for the game. Kris Joseph tallied 13 points, while #C.J. Fair had 12. Dion Waiters and Fab Melo# both poured in 11 points, and Scoop Jardine chipped in with 10.
With Syracuse leading by two at halftime, 36-34, SU caught fire in the second half, converting of 19 of its 26 shots (73.1 percent).
The Syracuse depth once again proved to be too much, outscoring the Friars 35-1. SU also held a 43-26 advantage of points in the paint.
The first half featured six ties and eight lead changes, but Triche's first three pointer of the evening at the 1:28 mark gave SU a lead it would hold onto for the remainder of the game.
The Orange opened the second stanza converting eight of its first nine shots from the floor, including three made three-pointers by Triche.
Despite a 19-7 Syracuse run to open the second half, Providence responded to close within seven at 62-55. However, a 5-0 Orange spurt ensued, highlighted by a Triche layup and a three-point dagger from James Southerland, and stretched the lead back to 12 points at 67-55.
The Friars would have one last run in them, getting as close as six at 70-64, but five straight points courtesy of Waiters stretched the lead back to 11 and wrapped up Syracuse's 16th consecutive victory.
Jardine was two assists shy of his career-high with a game and season-best 11 helpers, while Rakeem Christmas led the Orange with five rebounds.
All five Providence starters scored in double-digits and accounted for 72 of its 73 points. Gerard Coleman led the way with 17 points.
