SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University softball coach Leigh Ross announced that Sydney O'Hara, Nicole Lundstrom and Christina Clermont have signed National Letters of Intent (NLI). The talented trio will join the SU roster in 2013.
"This is a very talented class this year and they have all played at a high level with their travel teams, so they all have great experience playing with some of the best juniors and seniors in the country," Ross said.
O'Hara, a native of Syracuse, N.Y. was selected as the Post-Standard's Honor Athlete of the Week in June 2011, following her second consecutive All-CNY Player of the Year and New York State First Team honors.
"Sydney is from such a good softball program right here in the area and she's not only a great athlete, but she's also a big lefty hitter, so she will be able to help us off the mound as well," Ross said.
The starting varsity pitcher from Cicero-North Syracuse High School held a 37-5 pitching record, posting 598 career strikeouts, garnering the Post-Standard's All-CNY Softball Player of the Year award. In addition to leading her team to back-to-back appearances at the NY State Championship game in 2011 and 2012, she also played with the TC Tremors Gold team.
Lundstrom earned MVP honors on the varsity softball team at Dighton Rehoboth High School in 2012 and will serve as team captain in 2013. Following a standout year in 2011-12 as the starting catcher, she earned Boston Globe and Boston Herald first team All State and All Scholastic honors and was selected as a South Coast High School Conference team All Star.
"Nicole is really going to be an impact right away, as a catcher and another big lefty hitter, we are really excited to see her get in and be successful," Ross said.
In addition to playing on the road with the Rhode Island Thunder Gold from 2009-12, she also participated in varsity track and field in 2010.
Clermont will join the SU roster after already serving as the starting varsity pitcher at San Marcos High School for three years. The two-time MVP at San Marcos HS in 2010 and 2011 earned back-to-back honors as Pitcher of the Year for the Avocado East League in 2011 and 2012, including the Athlete of the Year award in 2012 at San Marcos. She was featured in the 2011 spring edition of Spotlight Sports Magazine and helped her team earn the title at the 2012 Avocado East League Championship.
"Christina has great experience, she has been very successful in California and she knows how to win, having been part of a winning tradition,"Â Ross said.
She also played for the 18Gold SoCal Choppers and saw action in the 2010 and 2011 Canadian National Open Fastpitch Tournament where she helped lead the 19u team to a third place finish both years.
