WASHINGTON – Three Orange men's lacrosse players have been named to the 2012 Tewaaraton Watch List, released Wednesday, Feb. 15 by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. Redshirt senior Tim Desko and juniors JoJo Marasco and Brian Megill are potential candidates for the award, which is presented to the college lacrosse player of the year.
Syracuse's three selections to the watch list are tied with Virginia and Princeton for the most of any one school. In all, 73 players are considered potential nominees for the award which will be presented on May 31 at the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
All three of SU's potential candidates were named preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse and picked to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team by the conference's coaches.
A third-team preseason All-American, Desko tallied 19 points, including 16 goals, in 10 games last year. For his career, he has 41 goals and 52 points in 39 games.
Marasco earned preseason honorable mention All-America honors in December after tying for the Syracuse lead in points (41) and assists (18) in 2011. Marasco has 32 goals and 26 assists in his first two seasons for the Orange and has scooped up 34 career ground balls.
A two-year starter on defense and the 2012 BIG EAST Preseason co-Defensive Player of the Year, Megill is a second-team preseason All-American. He recorded 34 ground balls and led all SU close defenders with 27 caused turnovers a year ago.
The Tewaaraton Award has been presented each year since 2001. Syracuse attackman Mike Leveille won the award in 2008. He was the second Orange player to do so, joining 2002 and 2004 Tewaaraton Award winner Mike Powell. Virginia's Steele Stanwick took home the trophy last year after leading the Cavaliers to the national championship.
