PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – After building a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth inning, the Syracuse University softball team was unable to close out No. 5 UCLA (11-4), as the Bruins defeated the Orange 6-3 in the final game of the Cathedral Classic.
The Orange finished the tournament with a mark of 2-3 with wins against Northwestern and UC Davis, and losses to Pacific, No. 16 Arizona and No. 5 UCLA.
The Bruins wasted no time crossing the plate as UCLA was leading 1-0 after the top of the first inning. That would be the score until the bottom of the fourth inning when Lisaira Daniels hit her third home run of the tournament to tie the game at 1-1. Daniels' three home runs this season is two shy of her 2011 season total.
Syracuse would then take its first lead of the game in the fifth inning. Stephanie Watts drew a leadoff walk, which was then followed by a sac bunt by Kelly Saco. Saco was called safe as the empire ruled that the first baseman was off of the bag. Morgan Nandin then laid down another bunt to move the two runners to second and third, bringing up pinch hitter Julie Wambold. Wambold hit a shot to the second baseman who was unable to make a play and then threw it away at first to allow both runs to score, putting SU up 3-1.
The Orange would then let the Bruins back into the game with costly errors of their own, beginning in the top of the sixth inning. Jenna Caira plunked the leadoff batter and then allowed a single to put runners on first and second. After a fielder's choice to get the lead runner, a wild pitch advanced UCLA runners to second and third. The bases were then loaded by a walk.
UCLA's Fox would reach on an error by Morgan Nandin at short stop to bring a run across, which was followed by a two-run single, giving the lead back to UCLA, 4-3.
The Orange would go down in order in the bottom of the sixth, and then UCLA tacked on two insurance run in the top of the seventh. The Bruins reached safely with a hit and then a Syracuse fielding error to open the inning, which was followed by two-consecutive RBI singles which increased the UCLA lead to 6-3.
SU would be unable to mustard any offense in the bottom of the seventh and would ultimately end up losing by that score.
Daniels was 7-for-13 on the weekend (.538 avg.) with three home runs and six walks. She reached base safely in 14 of her 19 plate appearances.
The Orange is in action next weekend at the Citrus Classic-ESPN Rise, in Orlando, Fla. Syracuse will take on North Carolina, Auburn, Virginia, Michigan and Baylor in Orlando.
