So far the 2012 men's lacrosse season has started like the previous four, with the Orange winning its first two games. Syracuse has gotten off to 2-0 starts every year dating back to 2008.
Capitalizing on home field advantage early in the season has been a key factor as the Orange has opened every season with back-to-back home games since 2007.
During its five straight 2-0 starts, the Orange has outscored its foes, 141-70, for an average margin of victory of 7.1 goals per game. Seven of the 10 games have been decided by five goals or more, while SU won three of the contests by at least 10.
Five of the 10 wins, including Sunday's 10-9 triumph, have come against Army. The Black Knights have visited the Dome in the season's second week every year since 2007. The balance of the 10 victories include season-opening triumphs against Villanova (2008), Providence (2009), Denver (2010, 2011) and Albany (2012).
Interestingly, the only time in the last four years Syracuse was able to get to 3-0 was last season, following a 12-10 home win against Virginia. The three 2-0 starts before that (2008, 2009 and 2010) were each derailed by losses to the Cavaliers.
Another opportunity for a 3-0 beginning presents itself this weekend and once again Virginia is the opponent. The Orange and the top-ranked Cavaliers square off Sunday, March 4 at 4:30 p.m. in Klöckner Stadium.
