SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse enters the season ranked No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) preseason poll. The Orange is one of four BIG EAST teams ranked in the top 20, joined by Loyola (No. 7), Georgetown (No. 15) and Notre Dame (No. 20).
Defending national champion Northwestern was voted No. 1, followed by Maryland, North Carolina, Florida and Duke. The Orange will face three of the top five and nine of the top 20 teams in the preseason poll this season.
Syracuse returns four of its top five scorers from a year ago, including its leading scorer Michelle Tumolo. Tumolo tallied 63 points last season and set a school record for assists by a sophomore with 33. She enters her junior season ranked 10th on SU's career scoring list (137 points) and fifth on the all-time assists list (70).
The Orange also returns several experienced defenders, including two-year starters Janelle Stegeland and Jill Cammett. In addition, junior Becca Block earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors in 2011 after ranking second on the squad in draw controls (28) and tying for second in caused turnovers (9).
The Orange starts the season at home against Boston College on Tuesday, Feb.21 at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
