ORLANDO – The Syracuse University softball team (6-6) defeated its first ranked opponent of the season with a 6-2 victory against No. 24 North Carolina, then was topped by No. 17 Auburn 5-0 in the night cap of day one at the Citrus Classic on Friday.
Game One: Syracuse 6, No. 24 North Carolina 2
Carey-Leigh Thomas and Lisaira Daniels each hit home runs to propel the Syracuse University softball team (6-5) past No. 24 North Carolina (12-3), 6-2, in its first game of the Citrus Classic on Friday afternoon.
Thomas opened the scoring with her second round-tripper of the season to lead off the top of the second inning, giving Syracuse a 1-0 lead. Stephanie Watts followed Thomas with a single, and then Kelly Saco was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with no outs.
Morgan Nandin then successfully laid down a sacrifice bunt. The North Carolina third baseman tried to get the lead runner at third base but threw it away, allowing Watts to score on the E5. Saco would eventually be brought home on an RBI singles through the right side by Shirley Daniels, giving SU a 3-0 cushion in the second inning.
The Tar Heels would get one run back in the bottom half of the second as Jordan Scarboro led off with a double. She would steal third base and then eventually crossed the plate via a passed ball. That would be all the offense UNC would generate until the sixth inning.
Lisaira Daniels broke the game open in the top of the fifth with a three run shot. With one out, Nandin walked and then Ashley Dimon was hit by a pitch. Two batter later, Daniels connected on her fourth long shot of the year, putting SU up 6-1.
UNC scored one run in the bottom of the sixth, but SU starting pitcher Jenna Caira stifled UNC the entire day, pitching six innings while allowing five hits and striking out seven.
Game Two: No. 17 Auburn 5, Syracuse 0
A five run third inning helped No. 17 Auburn (15-0) remain perfect as the Tigers defeated Syracuse (6-6), 5-0, in Syracuse's second game of the Citrus Classic on Friday evening.
Tiger's pitcher Angel Bunner threw a complete two-hitter while striking out nine Orange batters along the way.
Auburn's third inning was sparked by a leadoff double by left fielder Amber Harrison. She was brought home by a fielder's choice and a throwing error by Carey-Leigh Thomas. The next two batters reached base safely and scored on a two-run single courtesy of Brooke Lathan. Auburn would then tack on two more runs with a passed ball and an RBI single for its 5-0 cushion.
In her first career start, freshman Lindsay Taylor allowed five hits and five runs, only two of which were earned. Stacy Kuwik allowed just one hit in three innings of relief work.
The Orange is back in action tomorrow with two more games beginning at 10:00 a.m. Syracuse and Virginia meet in SU's first game, which is followed by a contest with No. 15 Michigan at 12:15 p.m. The game with Michigan can be viewed from a computer or with a smart phone on ESPN3 (www.ESPN3.com).
