BOSTON – The Orange defense shut down the Badgers on their final possession as the top-seed Syracuse men's basketball team (34-2) defeated fourth-seeded Wisconsin (26-10), 64-63, in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament at TD Banknorth Garden. Triche became the 57th player in SU history to score 1,000 points in the process. Wisconsin's Jared Berggren and Jordan Taylor tallied a game-high 17 points.
The Orange shot 55 percent for the game (27-of-49) and was 5-of-9 from behind the arch. Wisconsin was 43 percent overall (21-of-49) and hit 14-of-27 from downtown, including 9-of-16 in the second half.
Triche got Syracuse off to a fast start by scoring five of the first seven SU points. But three early turnovers helped Wisconsin, and the game would be tied at seven after the first media timeout.
Wisconsin's Jared Berggren carried the Badgers' offense early, tallying 10 of their 15 points and helped give Wisconsin a 15-11 lead with 11:14 remaining in the half. Two fouls though, forced Berggren to the bench for an extended period in the opening half.
With the Badgers leading 17-11, Triche scored four-consecutive points to surpass the 1,000 career points plateau. Waiters then connected from long range to put Syracuse back in the lead 18-17 with 8:46 remaining in the half.
Syracuse then surged ahead with an 11-0 run and would lead 33-23 at the under four media timeout. #C.J. Fair# ignited the run by scoring six of the 11 points, while Waiters hit a jumper and Scoop Jardine capped it off by hitting a triple. Wisconsin scored the final four points of the half and cut SU's lead to 33-27 at intermission.
The Badgers came out on fire in the second half, connecting on four of their first six shots, and tied the game at 40. But Syracuse would respond with an 8-1 run, six of those points from Fair, and led 48-41 at the under 12 media break.
Out of that timeout, Berggren and Ben Brust drained back-to-back three's to get Wisconsin within one and forced Syracuse into a timeout. The Badgers continued to shoot lights out from behind the arch and hit their next four from downtown. Wisconsin's fifth-consecutive made triple gave the Badgers their first lead of the second half at 56-53 with 7:59 remaining.
The Orange would fight back though, as Baye Keita grabbed an offensive board and converted, followed by four straight points by Waiters to put the Orange back up 62-59. Wisconsin would score the next hoop and SU led by one at the final media timeout of the game.
With Syracuse clinging to its 64-63 lead, Wisconsin had the ball with 15 seconds remaining for one final shot. Taylor would be the one to take the final shot, but his contested three was short and SU punched its ticket to the elite eight.
Notes: Jim Boeheim notched his 890th career victory … This is SU's first time in the Elite 8 since it won the National Championship in 2003 … Syracuse held a 26-25 advantage on the glass and had a 30-10 advantage in the paint … Scoop Jardine is 9-of-10 from the free throw line in three NCAA Tournament games.
