During my first two years at SU, we always practiced at the Carrier Dome during the winter. However, since Manley Fieldhouse was remodeled two years ago we haven't played softball in the Dome since. Playing in the Dome Duel last weekend was a cool experience for us because there is no other indoor softball field in such a huge arena. The Carrier Dome is a landmark facility in Syracuse. Everyone who lives around here knows about the Dome. The football, basketball and lacrosse teams and now the softball team, can all play in the same facility.
Typical Syracuse weather in March doesn't permit us, or anyone else from getting outside. So being able to play our games at home was something we've never been able to do before. As a senior, I am happy that my last year was the inaugural year for this tournament. I hope that this tournament becomes a tradition and continues to grow with more and more teams.
It was nice, as I said, to be able to play our first games at home this early in the year. But it was also important that we played well last weekend. Playing on turf inside is obviously going to be different than grass and dirt outside. The hops are a little higher and the ball skips a little different but the game never changes too much.
Colgate and Canisius are teams we haven't faced in a few years but definitely not teams to take it easy on. Both games required us to play sharp defense and strong offense. There was a great turnout in crowd size, and we ended the weekend the way we wanted.
