PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior pitcher Jenna Caira has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for leading the Syracuse softball team to a monumental weekend at the Citrus Classic.
Caria was a perfect 3-0 in the circle with all of her wins coming against nationally ranked opponents (No. 24 North Carolina, No. 15 Baylor and No. 11 Baylor). She struck out 17 batters in 20 innings of work, while allowing just 13 hits. She had a 1.05 ERA in the three games.
Against the Tar Heels, Caira threw six strong innings with sevens K's. The Toronto, Ontario native followed that up by going the distance against the Wolverines with three strikeouts. In SU's final game of the tournament, Caira was dominant once again, registering seven more strikeouts and surrendering just three hits in the complete game effort against Baylor.
Caira is now 6-3 on the season with a 2.35 ERA. She is SU's all-time leader in wins with 76 and in strikeouts with 825.
Syracuse defeated back-to-back nationally-ranked opponents for the first time in program history this past weekend. The Orange also knocked off three ranked teams in one weekend for the first time ever.
The Orange looks to carry its momentum into next weekend's USF Under Armour Classic in Tampa, Fla. Syracuse will play Miami (OH), USC Upstate, Boston U., Kennesaw State and Virginia Tech at the tournament.
