SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It was a monumental weekend for the Syracuse University softball team, highlighted by going 4-1 at the Citrus Classic in Orlando and defeating three nationally-ranked opponents along the way.
The Orange spilt its opening day of competition by defeating No. 24 North Carolina 6-2, and losing to No. 17 Auburn 5-0 in the night cap. Carey-Leigh Thomas and Lisaira Daniels each hit home runs against UNC, while pitcher Jenna Caira threw six strong innings and struck out seven Tar Heels.
In SU's first game of day two, the Orange scored one run in the top of the seventh, and two runs in the top of the eighth to rally for a 3-1 extra inning victory against Virginia. Syracuse then squared off against No. 15 Michigan on an ESPN3 telecast and defeated the Wolverines 4-2.
With SU leading Michigan 1-0, Daniels smacked her second round-tripper of the tournament with a two run shot to left center field. That would be all the run support Caira would need as she pitched a complete game victory, giving up five hits and striking out three.
Syracuse's final game of the tournament featured yet another dominant pitching performance from the Syracuse ace. Caira threw another complete game, this time allowing just three hits and striking out seven batters. Syracuse edged the Bears by a score of 2-1 and both of SU's run were scored via solo homers; one from sophomore Shirley Daniels and the winning run by senior captain Lacey Kohl.
For her efforts this past weekend, Caira was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. She threw 20 innings and recorded 17 strikeouts while allowing just 13 hits. She had a 1.05 ERA in the three games combined.
Lisaira Daniels led the offensive charge, batting .375 with six hits, two home runs, six RBI, four runs scored and four stolen bases.
“We turned a corner this weekend,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “Instead of just playing the top teams in the country, we beat the top teams in the country this weekend. This weekend will put the girls in a good mind set moving forward to the post season knowing we can win these games.”
The wins against Michigan and Baylor were the first back-to-back victories against nationally-ranked opponents in program history. The three wins against the Top 25 were also a program best in one weekend of competition.
Syracuse looks to carry its momentum into the USF Under Armour Classic next weekend in Tampa, Fla. The Orange will square off against Miami (OH), USC Upstate, Boston U., Kennesaw State and Virginia Tech in that tournament.
