SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse women's basketball signee and McDonald's All-American Brianna Butler was named First-Team All-State on Wednesday by the New York State Sportswriters Association. The 5-11 guard recently completed a stellar senior campaign in which she led Nazareth High School in Brooklyn to the State Federation Class AA semifinals.
Butler is a five-star recruit and rated the No. 13 player in the 2012 class by ESPN Hoopgurlz and fourth among guards. Originally from King of Prussia, Pa., she led Nazareth to a No. 1 in the CHSAA and New York City, as well as high as No. 3 ranking nationally in 2011-12. The Lady Kingsmen finished the season 18-4 overall after winning the New York Catholic League title at 12-2.
Butler played her AAU basketball with the renowned Exodus program out of New York City which, like Nazareth, was coached by the late Robert “Apache” Paschall.
Butler was one of 24 players nationally to be selected and play in March 28's McDonald's All-American game in Chicago. Quentin Hillsman's Orange were one of just six programs nationally to have multiple signees playing in the game as Brittney Sykes, a 5-9 guard from University High School in Newark, N.J., also garnered the honor. They joined Juanita Ward (2005) and Erica Morrow (2007) as the only McDonald's All-Americans in Syracuse women's basketball history.
Butler and Sykes are part of a highly-touted, five-member recruiting class coming to SU in the fall that is ranked No. 6 nationally by ESPN Hoopgurlz. They will be joined by Cornelia Fondren, a 5-9 guard from Memphis, Tenn., Taylor Ford, a 6-1 forward and teammate of Butler's at Nazareth, and Pachiyaanna Roberts, a 6-1 forward from Powder Springs, Ga. who was named Georgia Miss Basketball earlier this month.
