Wheddon Recaps Spring Season
4/25/2012 2:11:45 PM | Women's Soccer
Syracuse completed a successful spring season on April 21. The Orange went undefeated, posting victories against Siena, St. Bonaventure, Canisius, Cornell and Buffalo.
Head coach Phil Wheddon recaps Syracuse's non-traditional season below:
"I'm extremely proud of the efforts of the team throughout the spring. Our players have worked hard to implement the ideas that we have presented and have progressed tremendously. The spring is a time for development and our players have really bought into everything we are trying to do. In the weight room and on the field, we have made significant gains. Thanks to Dan (Pribula), in the Strength and Conditioning department, our players were fitter and stronger and ready to compete.
"We have tried some new things this spring, new training ideas, new formations and have asked a lot of the players. They have responded to everything we have thrown at them and have embraced the challenges and, therefore, have become a stronger unit.
"Our play on the field has been very good, for the most part, and I couldn't be prouder of the group. In our 11v11 games this spring we have not only gone unbeaten, but we have not conceded a single goal. It doesn't matter what sport you play or what team you play against, to go five games and not give up a goal is a significant achievement. It is a testament to the team as a whole and their commitment to each other and to the system that we are trying to play.
"While we all know that we have a long way to go, our spring season has allowed us to experiment and put in the hard work that is necessary to get better. As our team goes their separate ways for the summer, I am extremely excited about the possibilities for the fall season. We have a great group of players coming to join us in the fall and, with the progress already made, it should lead to an exciting season for SU Women's Soccer.
"I think it is also important to thank the staff for everything that they have done to help our program. This is a real team effort and our staff has been fantastic. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our team and staff and has supported us this spring and a special thanks to Jim Miller and all of the people that work on our facilities, we really appreciate everything you do.
"That's all for now. I look forward to seeing you at future Syracuse women's Soccer events and at our 'CUSE Soccer Academy camps.
