PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Jenna Caira and sophomore Shirley Daniels have been recognized by the BIG EAST for their efforts in guiding SU to a series victory against 18/16 USF this past weekend.
Caira was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for going 2-0 against the Bulls and notching her fourth career no-hitter. She struck out 19 batters in three appearances, allowed just two hits and issued just one walk.
In the opening game of the series, Caira led SU to a 2-0 victory. She recorded double-digit strikeouts for the eighth time this season with 10.
On senior day, Caira threw a gem with the no-hitter. She allowed one base runner the entire game and finished the afternoon with eight strikeouts. The win gave Syracuse its second-consecutive 40-win season.
Daniels, who made BIG EAST Honor Roll, was 6-for-11 at the plate with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. In the series opener, her homer in the bottom of the fifth broke a scoreless tie and proved to be the game-winner.
In the final game of the series, Daniels hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the second inning to put SU ahead 6-0.
This is Caira's seventh weekly award while Daniels is being recognized for the first time of her career.
Syracuse now heads to the BIG EAST Tournament to defend its title and looks to make it three conference championships in a row. SU is the three-seed and will play St. John's on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
