SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Recent graduate Stephanie Watts will depart for Munich, Germany on June 6th to begin her professional career with the Haar Disciples, members of the German Softball Bundesliga.
“This is going to be the experience of a lifetime,” Watts stated. “I get to travel Germany and play the game I love. It hasn't hit me yet, but I'm sure it will once I am on that plane.”
Watts was discovered by the Haar head coach after a fellow international player and a friend of Watts informed her of an international recruiting website where she could post her playing information. A month later, Watts had three offers to play professional, including two teams in Switzerland.
The second baseman will play for four months before returning home to California in October.
Watts was statistically one of the greatest players in SU's history. She is the all-time leader in games played and started, at bats, runs scored, triples and total bases. She ranks second in hits and stolen bases, third in home runs and four all-time in runs batted in. Her solo home run guided Syracuse to its biggest win in program history as the Orange defeated No. 2 Arizona State 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament three weeks ago.
“What a great opportunity for her,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “I tell every student-athlete to play for as long as they can. She will continue to learn about the game, and it is a whole new experience being in a foreign country and learning about the people and their culture. I am proud of her for taking advantage of that. Softball is part of who Stephanie is.”
