The Syracuse Athletics video “Breaking Barriers – Building Dreams: The Landmark Achievement of Ernie Davis” won earned national recognition. The special was named best feature by a college athletics department at the College Sports Media Awards ceremony, presented by the Sports Video Group and the National Association of Directors of College Athletics (NACDA).
The feature, produced by SU's Executive Producer of Media Content Roger Springfield, recounts the story of Davis becoming the first African American recipient of the Heisman Trophy. It was created for the University's celebration of the 50th anniversary of Davis' landmark accomplishment. The video feature includes exclusive interviews with Davis friends Jim Brown and John Brown, relatives Chuck Davis and Marion Summers, and civil rights leader and sociologist, Dr. Harry Edwards.
“This is a tremendous honor,” Springfield said. “The competition from our peers throughout the country was incredible. The most rewarding aspect of this recognition is that we are continuing to propagate the Ernie Davis story to a national audience. Everyone needs to be aware of his place in history.”
A total of 16 College Sports Media Awards in four different divisions were handed out at the ceremony, held at the Westin Peachtree Plaza. The divisions, National Television Networks, Regional Networks, Collegiate Athletics and College Students each named winners in four different categories; live game or event production, program series, promotion or marketing campaign and special features.
Last week, the athletics department video production department won a Silver Telly award in the Regional Television Commercial Campaign division for its 2011 Syracuse Football “Man on the Street” season ticket TV commercials. The series of commercials featured unscripted, impromptu interviews with numerous Syracuse fans, which were filmed last summer in the Armory Square area of downtown Syracuse. It was Springfield's 21st Telly Award. The national competition honors outstanding work in Film, Video and Commercial production.
