SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse women's rowing head coach Justin Moore, along with men's head coach Dave Reischman and men's assistant coach Shawn Bagnall, have served as coaches this summer for the USRowing Under-23 Women's National Team, which won gold this weekend at the U23 World Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.
Below is Coach Moore's recap of the final day of racing:
Conditions were blustery at the U23 World Championships in Trakai, Lithuania today, so much so that the lanes were re-assigned prior to today's racing. The USA Women's U23 8+ led wire to wire today on its way to victory at the U23 World Championships.
Once again, the British challenged early, getting to the 500-meter mark a mere .26 seconds behind the U.S. (they had led the U.S. at the 500 in the previous race). However, they were unable to sustain the pace set by the U.S. in the middle of the race, and were a full length back by the 1,500m mark. It was the Germans and Netherlands who proved to have the late speed necessary to earn the final two medals in the last 500 meters. Both crews rowed through a fading Great Britain to win the silver (Germany) and bronze (Netherlands). However, it was the United States who had staked its claim to the gold in the middle 1,000 meters of the race course. Entering the final 500 meters with a 5 second lead over the Germans and a 7 second lead over the Netherlands, I'm sure the women in the crew enjoyed racing the final 500 in front of the grandstands.

With the U.S. National Team Coaches dedicating themselves to the Olympic effort this summer, the US Women's U23 team depended a great deal on Syracuse University and the surrounding community for support during training. The assistance of the community, which consisted of host families housing and sometimes feeding the athletes and the outstanding training facilities of Syracuse Athletics provided an ideal environment for the women to train and be selected. The Syracuse Rowing coaching staff and Department of Athletics is very proud to have contributed in a meaningful way to this experience.
All the best,
Justin
