TURKU, Finland – The United States (4-2) avenged Tuesday's 15-13 loss to the Iroquois Nationals (3-2) by defeating the second-seeded Iroquois, 12-7, in the semifinals of the 2012 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) U-19 World Championship Thursday, July 19. The Americans will face top-seeded Canada (5-0) in the gold-medal game Saturday, July 21 at 9 a.m. (EST).
Â
After allowing 15 goals to the Iroquois on the final day of pool play, the U.S. defense, which included Orange rising sophomore Ralph D'Agostino, held the Haudenosaunee to just seven goals Thursday. The U.S. gave up two goals in the second half and shut out the Iroquois in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory.
Â
Steve Pontrello (North Carolina) paced the Americans with five goals, including three straight early in the second half. Pontrello's three third-quarter tallies were part of a 4-0 U.S. run that broke open 5-5 game and gave the Americans a lead it never relinquished.
Â
Canada advanced to Saturday's championship game with a 15-4 dismantling of England in Thursday's first semifinal. This is the fourth straight time, and fifth time since U-19 competition began in 1988, the U.S. and Canada will meet for the world championship. The Americans have won all six previous world titles.
