Legendary wide receiver Art Monk will step onto the Syracuse gridiron once more. The Pro Football Hall of Famer will be honored on Oct. 5 at the Carrier Dome during Syracuse's BIG EAST opener against Pittsburgh (7:00 p.m., ESPN) for his induction into the National Football Foundation (NFF) College Football Hall of Fame. Monk is one of 14 players and three coaches who will be inducted on December 4 in New York City.
Â
Monk joins 17 others with Syracuse ties in the College Football Hall of Fame, including former coach Dick MacPherson, Jim Brown, Larry Csonka and Floyd Little. Syracuse is one of just 16 Football Bowl Subdivision schools with 18 or more enshrines in the College Hall of Fame.
A current member of the SU Board of Trustees, Monk led the Orange in receiving from 1977-79. He is tied for eighth on Syracuse's career receptions list (102) and ranks eighth on the career receiving yards list (1,644). The winner of the Lambert Trophy as the top college football player in the Eastern U.S. in both his freshman and senior season, he set the Syracuse single-game record with 14 catches against Navy in 1977. He was honored as an All-American in 1979.
In 1980, the Washington Redskins selected Monk with the 18th overall pick in the NFL Draft. During his 16-year NFL career, Monk played 14 seasons with the Redskins before joining the New York Jets for the 1994 campaign and playing with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1995. Monk played for four Redskins Super Bowl teams, including Super Bowl XVII, Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXVI, and won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the team in Super Bowl XVII.
Â
The 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Class will be inducted at the 55th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on December 4, 2012, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. They will be honored guests at the National Hall of Fame Salute at the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on January 2, 2013 and officially enshrined in July of 2013.
Â
Each member who will be inducted in December will participate in the NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute program. The on-campus salutes began with the inaugural hall of fame class in 1951 and the storied tradition continues today.Â
Â
The Orange travel to Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 22nd to face the Golden Gophers at 8 p.m. (BTN). After a bye weekend on Sept. 29th, SU returns home to face Pittsburgh on Friday, Oct. 5th (7 p.m.; ESPN). Tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
