SYRACUSE – After sweeping the doubles competition the Syracuse tennis team (1-5, 0-1) captured victories in five-of-six singles matches to earn the Orange's first victory of the season, defeating Navy (2-3), 6-1 in the season home-opener at Drumlins.
"It got kind of dodgy there for a second in between some of those sets when it got pretty tight and it could have easily gone the other way," said head coach Luke Jensen. We have lost those earlier in the season so this is a really good change of pace for us."
Syracuse opened the match strong, sweeping the doubles competition for the first time this season. Juniors Aleah Marrow and Maddie Kobelt led the way on court one, pairing up to defeat Navy's Erin Snook and Noelle Kaufmann 8-2, while sophomores Jimena Wu and freshman Sophia Dzulynsky also claimed an 8-2 win on court three.
The duo of sophomores Komal Safdar and Amanda Rodgers concluded the doubles matches with an 8-4 triumph on court two, taking down Emani Decquir and Sam Droop 8-4.
Heading into the singles matches with a 3-0 advantage, sophomore Brenna Bachini notched her second straight singles match, sweeping Droop on court five by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Marrow continued the momentum, taking down Kaufmann 6-4, 6-0 on court six.
Rodgers was next to finish, clinching the match for the Orange after beating Darien Sears 6-4, 6-3 on court two. Kobelt then came from behind to finish off Emani Dequir on court one 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. Despite losing the point on four, Safdar concluded the match with a gritty 7-5, 7-5 triumph against Snook.
SU is back in action next weekend hosting West Virginia at home on Jan. 2 at the Drumlins Country Club. The first serve is set for 10 a.m.
