PROVIDENCE – Fresh off another highly successful season that included the deepest postseason run in program history, the Orange has been picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST, as announced by the league on Monday, Jan. 27.
Syracuse recorded a 17-5 record in the conference in 2012, tying for third place in the final regular season standings with a 43-16 overall mark. Four SU student-athletes earned All-BIG EAST honors, highlighted by former second baseman Stephanie Watts and senior centerfielder Veronica Grant, who were both selected to the first team.
Grant, will return in 2013 after concluding last season with a .263 batting average, posting 30 hits, two home runs and 44 RBI, adding a .969 fielding percentage. Both of her home runs came at the top of the seventh inning with the Orange trailing, which then tied or put SU ahead.
Watts concluded her final BIG EAST campaign leading the team in average (.364), hits (24), runs (20), home runs (8) and RBI (20). Following graduation, Watts departed for Munich, Germany to begin her professional career with Haar Disciples.
Senior pitcher Stacy Kuwik was tabbed to the league's third team in 2012 after posting a perfect 8-0 record with a 1.02 ERA in BIG EAST play, combining for a 14-3 overall record. Kuwik will return to the starting role in 2013, following the graduation of All-BIG EAST second team selection and NFCA third team All-American, Jenna Caira. Caira has joined the SU staff as assistant coach this year and will mentor the pitchers.
Syracuse will kick off the 2013 season on the road in the Cougar Classic from February 15 to 17 in Charleston, S.C.
