SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 13th-ranked Orange men's lacrosse team will play its first road scrimmage since 2007 on Saturday, Feb. 2 when it travels to Columbus, Ohio take on No. 19 Ohio State and Robert Morris. Start time for the three-way scrimmage is at 11:30 a.m. at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The Orange takes on the host Buckeyes in the opening game followed by a 1:30 p.m. contest versus Robert Morris. Ohio State and Robert Morris square off in the third game at 3:30 p.m.
Â
The Orange has a limited history against this weekend's opponents. Syracuse is 2-0 all-time in the regular season against Ohio State and has never faced Robert Morris. Road scrimmages are also a rarity for the Orange. That last time Syracuse ventured away from the Carrier Dome for a preseason game was on Feb. 10, 2007 when it defeated Navy, 12-8, in Annapolis.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Orange began the 2013 campaign with two wins in its opening scrimmage last Saturday. Syracuse defeated Hofstra, 15-10, and knocked off Holy Cross, 16-6.
Â
The Orange jumped on the Pride right away in the first game, racing out to a 5-0 lead and a 7-1 halftime advantage. Hofstra pulled within one twice in the second half against SU's reserves before the Orange notched the game's last four goals to win by five.
Â
Against Holy Cross, SU was never threatened. The Orange led 3-1 after the first quarter and 12-4 by the end of the third on its way to a 10-goal triumph.
Fourteen different players combined for Syracuse's 31 goals in the two games. Juniors Derek Maltz, Pat Powderly and senior Luke Cometti each had four goals on the day.
Sophomore Bobby Wardwell started both games in goal and totaled seven saves in four quarters of work. Junior Dominic Lamolinara and sophomore Ben Romagnoli also saw time between the pipes.
Â
SCOUTING OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes come into the 2013 season ranked No. 19 in the preseason USILA Coaches' Poll. Last year the Buckeyes posted an 8-7 record, including a 5-1 mark in ECAC play, but lost to Denver in the opening round of their conference tournament and did not receive an NCAA Tournament invitation.
Â
The team's leading returning scorer is Logan Schuss. The senior attackman tallied 39 goals and 18 assists in 2012 on his way to winning ECAC Offensive Player of the Year honors. He was also a 2012 USILA Third Team All-American.
Â
Senior Dominique Alexander and sophomore Jesse King are the team's top midfielders. The two combined for 48 points in 2012 with Alexander tallying 11 goals and 12 assists and King notching 16 goals and nine helpers.
Â
Junior Greg Dutton is back as Ohio State's starting goalie. He boasted a 6.92 goals-against average and .575 save percentage in 14 starts in 2012. He was named to the 2012 All-ECAC Second Team and is a 2013 Inside Lacrosse Preseason Honorable Mention All-American.
Â
SCOUTING ROBERT MORRIS
The Colonials posted an 11-4 record last season and went undefeated in Northeast Conference play. They were bounced from the NEC Tournament in the first round by Mount St. Mary's. Andrew McMinn is in his second year as head coach after earning Northeast Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2012.
Â
Senior attackman Jack Hayes led Robert Morris in points last season with 61, and goals with 42. He also dished out 19 assists and was a 2012 All-NEC First Team selection. Alongside Hayes will be redshirt senior and fellow attackman Dave Morton who posted 30 goals and 19 assists last year, a performance that landed him a spot on the All-NEC Second Team.
Â
Senior Ben Lewis is the team's top defenseman. Lewis started every game for Robert Morris in 2012, tallying a team high 18 caused turnovers. He is a two time All-NEC selection.
