SU Upsets #4 Cal, Loses to #20 Hawaii in 12 Inning Finale

Honolulu, HI – The Syracuse softball team (9-14) advanced to the championship game of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament, upsetting top-seeded #4/5 California, 8-1, and Utah, 2-1. In the title tilt, the Orange lost to #20/23 Hawaii, 3-2 in 12 innings. SU played a total of 26 innings in 10 hours on the final day of competition.
Senior Jasmine Watson and sophomore Lindsay Taylor earned All-Tournament honors for their efforts on the field and the circle. Taylor pitched 20 innings on the day, earning a save against Utah, and a win against California, while also pitching all 12 innings against Hawaii.
In the championship game against Hawaii (22-7), SU scored first on an RBI single from sophomore Julie Wambold that drove in junior Shirley Daniels from second base.
In the bottom of the fifth, Hawaii tied the game at 2-all, when Kelly Majam hit a two-out, two-run homerun to right field. In the next frame, the Orange held off a Hawaii scoring threat. The Rainbow Warriors had runners at first and third with only one out, but Taylor forced the Hawaii batter to hit a grounder to freshman Corinne Ozanne.
Ozanne then threw it to first to get the hitter before Watson fired it home when she saw the runner at third was trying to score. Senior catcher Ashley Dimon completed the play by blocking the plate and appying the tag for the double play to end the threat.
Taylor pitched six straight scoreless innings, before giving up a walk-off homerun to Sharla Kleibenstein, who hit the ball over the center field wall to give the Rainbow Warriors the title.
In the semifinal round of the tournament, the Orange upset No. 4/5 California (23-3) in an 8-1 triumph for its first victory against a ranked opponent this season. SU snapped the Golden Bears' 22-game winning streak.
The SU offense got going early when Watson hit a sacrifice fly to center in the top of the first innning that scored Daniels from third base. In the top of the second, senior Veronica Grant led off with a homerun over the fence in right center. Grant's sixth long ball of the year gave SU a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth with two outs, Daniels cranked a three-run homer to right center to give the Orange a commanding 5-0 lead. The homerun was Daniels' second of the tournament.
SU scored again in fifth on a solo shot to center by Watson, marking her fifth homerun of the season. Watson went 2-for-3 against California with a HR, two RBI and a run scored. The Orange scored two more runs in seventh to extend their lead to as much as eight runs.
Taylor pitched a complete game against Cal, surrendering no earned runs while striking out three Golden Bear batters.
In the opening round of the tournament title games, the Orange secured a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Utah (13-10-1). Freshman Danielle Chitkowski doubled in the bottom of the sixth inning to knock in the game-winning run.
SU and Utah were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first four innings as neither team could muster anything on the offensive side. Senior Stacy Kuwik pitched six innings, giving up only one run, improving her record to 6-4.
