ORLANDO, Fla. – The Syracuse softball team battled #5/8 Texas in a 2-1 loss at the ESPN Rise Citrus Classic. Senior Veronica Grant hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth to give the Orange a 1-0 lead, but the Longhorns rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh for the victory.
Looking to erase the sting of an earlier loss to Longwood (8-4), the Orange (5-8) and the Longhorns (19-2) engaged in pitchers duel through five and a half innings. Syracuse pitcher Lindsay Taylor allowed just two hits in the game.
The Orange threatened in the bottom of the first when Jasmine Watson, Julie Wambold and Corinne Ozanne loaded the bases on walks. The Longhorns ended the inning on a flyout to center.
Leading off in the bottom of the sixth inning, Grant gave the Orange a 1-0 lead, slamming a home run over the fence in right field. In the top of the seventh, Texas scored two runs for the win.
In Syracuse's first game, Longwood opened a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added seven more runs in the fifth and sixth for the 10-0 victory.
Syracuse is back in action tomorrow morning taking on Mississippi State in the final matchup of the weekend. The first pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
