SU Sweeps Harvard to Win the Duel

Syracuse, N.Y. – In the bottom of the 10th inning Veronica Grant sprinted from third base after a wild pitch and stepped on home plate giving the Orange a 5-4 victory against Harvard in the second game of the 'Duel in the Dome.' Winners of four of its last five games, the Orange (11-14) completed the sweep of the Crimson and is now a perfect 4-0 inside the Carrier Dome.
SU started the scoring early when Shirley Daniels stole home on a successfully converted double steal in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. One batter later, Corrine Ozanne knocked in Emily Thompson from third base on a sacrifice fly to left field. Ozanne leads the team with 15 RBI.
In the top of the third inning, Harvard cut the lead in half, 2-1, courtesy of an RBI single by Shelbi Olson.
In the bottom of the fifth, senior Morgan Nandin, who made her 200th career start, hit a solo shot past the fence to give the Orange a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Jessica Ferry smacked a two-run long ball into the stands in left center to tie the game at 3-3.
Orange freshman Lindsey Larkin replaced senior Stacy Kuwik in the circle to start the seventh inning, and was solid in relief, pitching the next four innings.
In the top of the ninth, Harvard took a 4-3 lead after Zoe Galindo connected on a solo homerun to left center field.
Syracuse responded in the bottom of the ninth when Jasmine Watson answered with a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game, 4-4. It was her 12th RBI of the season.
After the Orange held Harvard without a run in the top of the 10th, Grant led off the bottom of the inning with a double to right center field. Later in the inning with two outs and Grant at third, the Harvard pitcher bounced in a pitch that the catcher could not control. Grant immediately took off toward home to score the winning run.
The Orange recorded five stolen bases in the game, including two by Daniels. She leads the team in the category with a perfect 16-of-16 mark.
The Orange will travel to play Louisville in a doubleheader on Friday, March 29 at 2 p.m. and a single game on Saturday at 12 p.m.
